Why is he important?

Rian Hughes's body of work consists of poster art, font designs, advertisements and little films, all influenced by the style of the 60's.

Historical context

After studying at the London College of Printing, Rian Hughes worked for an advertising agency, i-D magazine, and a series of record sleeve design companies.

Under the name 'Device' he now provides design and illustration for advertising campaigns, record sleeves, book jackets, graphic novels, and television. Since setting up his studio he has worked extensively for the British and American comic industries as a designer, typographer, and illustrator.

Toybox, one-man show of limited edition prints at the Conningsby Gallery, London 2003 Powerhouse::uk exhibition, Horse Guard's Parade, 1999 Café Casbar, one-man show, Smith's Gallery, Covent Garden, 1990 Group show: Air Gallery, London, 1987 and other group travelling exhibitions to Taiwan, Edinburgh, Antwerp and Korea.
As a typographer Rian Hughes has launched a font book called "Ten Year Itch" and can be purchased at www.veer.com.
