Why is he important?

Man Ray's iconoclastic art-making emcompassed a wide range forms, having started out as a painter, he progressed to photography, often using everyday objects in his images. He also made many objects and collages using everyday items. He was part of an art movement that's influence can be seen the work of contemporary artists such as Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst.

Historical context

Man Ray was influenced initially by the photographer and gallery curator Aflred Steiglitz. and later by Marcel Duchamp and became part of the dada art movement which was against the art establishment of the day. In turn, he was influencial for other artists, for example, the photographers Bill Brandt and Lee Miller.
