Why is he/she important?

Internationally known, not just as a typographer, but for his sculptures and engravings Worked for various clients including league of nations and London Transport. The font Gill Sans has been used by a number of high profile companies, including the BBC and Bennetton.

Historical context

Gill spent many years in an artistic community in Ditchling. The community as a whole were inspired by William Morris. Through this community Gill made many links with other artists. He urged various other artists to follow traditional techniques such as printing,calligraphy and weaving etc.

How to see their work

Gill's works are diverse, his work appears in Tate Britain, The National Portrait Gallery. His most widely known font comes packaged with various operating systems.Gill Sans also features on Penguin books. Has an essay published, entitled "An Essay on Typography" (1931)
