The icon of industrial design of the 1990’s the Juicy Salif designed by Philippe Starck, for Italian kitchenware company Alessi. The original, inspiration came from squeezing a lemon over a squid, but many observers think it looks like a spider. Its width is 14 cm, height 29 cm, and is constructed from cast and polished aluminum. The Alessi Juicy Salif is superb and only some would say functional piece of art work, but this I feel is more of an ornament for a kitchen rather than and everyday utensil, Starck did say that
"My juicer is not meant to squeeze lemons; it is meant to start conversations".
I like this object very much simply because its an everyday item that has been turned into an ornament and still has a practical use. I saw it when i started a weekend job, where it was sold. My first pay check went towards purchasing one, which is now sitting in my sisters kitchen as she decided to take it for a walk one day. Its design is something that will last for a long time, and not look dated due to its space age shape and polished look. Its practicality is not very good only because of the fact people tend not to want to get them dirty, but it can do its job very well indeed if you felt brave enough to get it covered in sticky juice.
